The 6 Hours of Texas Auctioneer CE Required for Renewal

Six TDLR-approved hours — including two mandatory law hours — renew your license

When it comes to renewing a Texas auctioneer license, the most common question is the simplest: how many hours, and what has to be in them? The answer is 6 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education — and within those six, two hours are specifically mandated to cover law and rules. Here's the full breakdown so you know exactly what your renewal CE must include.

The Short Answer: 6 Hours

Licensed auctioneers and associate auctioneers renewing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) complete 6 hours of approved continuing education each renewal cycle. The hours must come from a TDLR-approved provider, and at least 2 of the 6 hours must cover Texas auctioneer law and TDLR rules.

The 2 Mandatory Law-and-Rules Hours

These two hours are the non-negotiable core of the requirement. They cover the legal framework every Texas auctioneer operates under:

  • Occupations Code Chapter 1802 — the statute governing auctioneer licensing, registration, advertising, and the Auctioneer Education and Recovery Fund.
  • 16 TAC Chapter 67 — the TDLR administrative rules that put the statute into practice, plus relevant consumer-protection law such as the UCC and DTPA as they apply to auctions.

For a deeper look at these two hours, see our guide to Texas auctioneer law and rules CE.

The Remaining 4 Hours

The other four hours round out the practical knowledge that keeps an auction business compliant and professional. Our 6-hour course organizes them as:

  • Insurance & Risk Management — protecting yourself, your clients, and consigned property.
  • Auction Ethics & Professional Conduct — bidder and seller rights, prohibited practices, and handling disputes.
  • Contracts & Trust Accounts — escrow, timely settlement, and proper handling of sale proceeds.
  • Marketing & Business Operations — online and simulcast platforms, buyer's premiums, and sales-tax collection.

Why the Hours Are Structured This Way

The split — two law hours plus four practice hours — reflects what TDLR considers essential: you have to know the rules you operate under, and you have to be able to run a clean, ethical sale. Skipping the law content isn't an option, because those two hours are specifically required.
