Texas Cosmetology CE Requirements (4-Hour & 2-Hour)

Sanitation content is a required part of cosmetology CE

Texas cosmetology continuing education exists to keep operators current on the law and, just as importantly, on the sanitation and safety practices that protect clients. If you're renewing, here's a clear breakdown of how many hours you need, what they must cover, and how to make sure they count.

Who Needs Cosmetology CE?

Licensed operators (cosmetologists), estheticians, manicurists and nail technicians, and eyelash extension specialists renewing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) complete continuing education as part of renewal.

How Many Hours Do You Need?

There are two paths, depending on your situation:

  • Standard 4-hour renewal: The typical requirement for most license holders each renewal period.
  • 2-hour experienced renewal: A reduced option for operators who qualify as experienced. It still includes the required sanitation content.

If you're not sure which applies to you, your TDLR renewal notice will indicate your requirement. Our guide to the 2-hour experienced renewal explains who qualifies.

What the CE Must Cover

Texas cosmetology CE emphasizes health and safety. Our course is organized so both the 4-hour and 2-hour versions include the essentials:

  • Texas cosmetology law and TDLR rules — scope of practice, salon and booth-rental licensing, and inspections.
  • Sanitation and disinfection — tool and implement disinfection, foot-spa cleaning, single-use items, and infection control. Required in both courses.
  • Health, safety, and product knowledge — chemical safety, client consultation, and current practice standards (in the 4-hour course).

Why the Sanitation Hours Matter

Sanitation isn't filler — it's the content most tied to passing your salon inspection and protecting your clients. It covers the disinfection steps inspectors look for and the practices that prevent infections and complaints. That's why Texas keeps it in the CE requirement.

Make Sure Your Hours Count

Only CE from a TDLR-approved provider counts toward renewal. All American Tradesman CE is TDLR Provider #2437, and we report your completion to TDLR automatically — usually within 24 hours — so your hours are on file before you renew.

In short: choose the 4-hour or 2-hour course that fits your situation, make sure it includes the sanitation content (ours does), and let us handle the reporting.
