Texas Pesticide Applicator CEU Requirements Explained

Five credits a year - but only if the right categories are in them

The Texas CEU requirement for pesticide applicators looks simple on paper and trips people up in practice. The number is small, the deadline is annual, and there are category rules hiding behind the total. Here is the whole requirement in plain English.

The Short Answer: 5 CEUs Per Year

If you hold a commercial, noncommercial, or noncommercial political subdivision (NCPS) applicator license from the Texas Department of Agriculture, you need 5 CEUs during each twelve-month licensing period. Your licensing period runs from your original licensing date, so it is personal to you.

The Part People Miss: Category Requirements

Those 5 credits are not interchangeable. Your CEUs must include:

• At least 1 CEU in laws and regulations — the Texas Agriculture Code, TDA rules, recordkeeping, and your duties as a license holder.
• At least 1 CEU in integrated pest management or drift minimization — either one satisfies this, though many applicators take both.

The other credits can come from other approved applicator subjects such as calibration, equipment, or pesticide safety. Five credits with no laws-and-regulations credit will not renew your license, no matter how good the courses were.

CEUs Do Not Carry Over

There is no banking credits. If you attend a big field day and pick up eight CEUs, the extras do not roll into next year. Plan on earning 5 fresh credits every licensing period.

Private Applicators Are Different

Everything above is for commercial, noncommercial, and NCPS licenses. Private applicators — growers applying restricted-use products on their own or their employer's land — hold a longer license term with a different CEU total and schedule. If you are not sure which license you hold, check the license itself before you buy any course; it is the difference between renewing on time and buying the wrong training.

Making Sure Your CEUs Actually Count

Three things to verify before you pay:

• The course is TDA-approved and has a TDA course number.
• The credit categories cover laws and regulations plus IPM or drift.
• The dates fall inside your licensing period, not the one that just ended.
