Texas air conditioning and refrigeration (ACR) professionals must obtain proper licensing through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). This guide covers the essential requirements for ACR licensing in 2025.

ACR License Types

Texas offers four main ACR license categories:

• Class A Contractor: Unrestricted license for all ACR work (4 years experience + exam)
• Class B Contractor: Residential and systems up to 25 tons (2 years experience + exam)
• Class C Contractor: Window units and systems under 5 tons (1 year experience + exam)
• ACR Technician: Work under licensed contractor (18 months experience + exam)

Basic Requirements

All ACR license applicants must meet:

• 18 years of age or older
• High school diploma or equivalent

Examination
