Two ways to renew. If you're not in a registered program, you need the 4 hours.
Option 1: Enrollment in a Registered Program
If you're enrolled in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship training program, that enrollment satisfies the renewal requirement instead of the 4 hours. The program must be registered with TDLR, and the enrollment has to fall within the term of the license you're renewing.
Not sure your program qualifies? Ask your training director whether it's registered with TDLR as an electrical apprenticeship training program. Working for a contractor who trains you on the job isn't the same thing.
Option 2: 4 Hours of CE
Everyone else needs 4 hours from a TDLR-approved provider, covering:
- The National Electrical Code
- Texas electrician law (Occupations Code Chapter 1305) and TDLR's rules (16 TAC Chapter 73)
- NFPA 70E electrical safety
When to Take It
Apprentice licenses renew every year. The hours must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. If your license has already expired, they must be completed within the year before the date you renew. Check your exact dates in the Renewal Window Lookup.
Finish It on Your Phone
Our 4-hour course runs in any phone browser, so you can do a module on lunch break and pick up where you left off. When you finish, we report your completion to TDLR the same day.
