Rules that apply across programs

No repeat credit. Every TDLR program on this page says the same thing: you will not receive CE credit for attending the same course more than once. How that affects next year's renewal
Timing. For an on-time renewal, TDLR CE must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. For a late renewal, it must be completed within the one year immediately before the date you renew. TDA structural pest control uses the calendar year before your renewal year instead. Find your exact window
Reporting. Under 16 TAC §59.51, TDLR providers must report your completion within 7 days and issue your certificate within 15 days. Check what has posted in TDLR's CE Course Look Up. Hours not showing?
Multiple licenses. Holding more than one electrical license still means 4 hours total. Licenses in different programs (electrical and ACR, for example) each need their own approved hours. Multiple-license rules

Common questions

How many CE hours does a Texas electrician need?

4 hours per annual renewal for master, journeyman, maintenance, lineman, industrial and sign electricians, residential wiremen, and electrical and sign apprentices (16 TAC 73.25). Apprentices may instead be enrolled in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship program. Electrical contractors and residential appliance installers need no CE.

How many CE hours does a Texas HVAC / ACR license need?

ACR contractors need 8 hours per annual renewal, including at least 1 hour of Texas law and rules (16 TAC 75.25). Registered and certified ACR technicians renew with an application and fee; TDLR's CE rule applies to contractor licensees.

How many CE hours does a Texas tow operator need?

4 hours per annual renewal: 1 hour roadway safety, 1 hour Texas towing law and rules, and 2 hours from approved towing topics (16 TAC 86.250). Incident management operators take an 8-hour in-person professional development course instead at their first renewal.

How many CE hours do Texas water well drillers and pump installers need?

8 hours per two-year renewal for renewals on or after March 1, 2025: 1 hour of law and rules plus 7 hours of industry topics (16 TAC 76.25). Apprentices need a 1-hour law and rules course.

How many CE hours does a Texas cosmetologist need?

4 hours every two years (1 hour sanitation, 1 hour human trafficking awareness, 2 elective hours). Licensees who have held a Texas license for at least 15 years need only the 2 required hours.

How many CE hours does a Texas auctioneer need?

6 hours per renewal, including at least 2 hours of laws and rules regulating auctioneers (16 TAC 67.25).

Can I take the same CE course again next year?

TDLR does not give credit for attending the same course more than once. That rule appears on the electrician, ACR, towing, water well, cosmetology and auctioneer CE pages.
