Technicians renew with a form and a fee. Contractors need 8 hours.
Technicians: Application and Fee
TDLR's technician renewal page lists what a registered or certified technician needs to renew: an online renewal application and the fee. The designation is valid for one year. The page doesn't list any continuing education, and TDLR's ACR CE rule, 16 TAC §75.25, is written for licensees renewing an ACR contractor license.
Contractors: 8 Hours Every Year
If you hold an ACR contractor license, Class A or Class B, you need 8 hours of TDLR-approved CE to renew:
- At least 1 hour of Texas law and rules regulating ACR licensees
- The rest from approved ACR topics: codes, ethics, business practices, technical requirements
- Completed within the term of the current license, or within the year before the date you renew if you're late
- No credit for repeating a course you already took
Planning the Jump to Contractor
Many technicians eventually test for a contractor license. Once you hold one, the 8-hour requirement applies at every contractor renewal, so it helps to know it's coming. Keep each CE certificate for at least a year; TDLR can ask for it during an inspection or investigation.
Hold an Electrical License Too?
Your technician certification still has no CE, but your electrical license needs its own 4 hours. See multiple TDLR licenses.
