Holding Multiple TDLR Licenses: How Many CE Hours Do You Need?

All American Tradesman CE logo

Same program: one set of hours. Different programs: one set each.

Short answer: If all your licenses are electrical, you need 4 hours total, not 4 per license. TDLR says holders of more than one license type need only four hours, taken during the period of the license being renewed. Licenses in different TDLR programs, such as electrical and ACR, each have their own CE rule and their own approved courses, so each needs its own hours.

Same Program: One Set of Hours

Say you hold a master electrician license and a master sign electrician license. TDLR's electrician CE page is direct: if you hold more than one license type, you need only four hours of CE. The catch is timing. The course must be taken during the period of the license being renewed, so if your licenses expire on different dates, make sure the 4 hours fall inside the term of each license you're renewing.

Different Programs: Separate Hours

Electrical (16 TAC Chapter 73) and air conditioning and refrigeration (16 TAC Chapter 75) are separate TDLR programs with separate CE rules. TDLR approves CE providers and courses program by program, so an electrical course is approved for electrical renewals and an ACR course for ACR renewals.

You holdCE to renew
