Texas Structural Pest Control CEU Requirements Explained

The math is simple - the category rules and the calendar are where licenses get burned

The structural pest control CE requirement is not one number — it depends on which license you hold and which categories are on it. Here is the whole requirement in plain English, including the calendar-year rule that causes most of the trouble.

Certified Applicators: Category Credits Plus General Credits

If you are a certified commercial or noncommercial applicator, each year you need:

• 1 CEU in every category in which you are certified — pest control, termite (wood-destroying insects), lawn and ornamental, and so on. Certified in two categories? That is two category credits.
• 2 CEUs in general training, and at least one of the two must be in federal and state laws, pesticide safety, environmental protection, or integrated pest management. The other general credit can be in any approved general topic.

So a single-category applicator needs a minimum of three credits a year; each additional category adds one more.

Technicians: 8 Hours of Verifiable Training

Licensed technicians are on a different meter: 8 hours of verifiable training each calendar year. The topics span the technician curriculum — laws, pest identification, labels, safety, environmental protection, equipment, and non-chemical control. Approved CEU classes count and come with certificates, which makes the "verifiable" part easy.

The Calendar-Year Rule

Structural CE is earned by calendar year (January 1 through December 31), and the credits that support a renewal are the ones earned in the calendar year before the renewal year. Two consequences worth internalizing:

• Credits do not carry over. A big training year does not bank anything for the next one.
• Timing is everything in December. A class finished January 2 is a different compliance year than one finished December 30.

The one exception: no CE is required during the first calendar year you are certified.

Making Sure Your CEUs Actually Count

Three things to verify before you pay for training:

• The course is TDA-approved for structural licensees — check it in the TDA CEU course search.
• The credit types line up — category credits for your categories, and a qualifying topic for the required general credit.
• The dates fall inside the right calendar year, not the one that just closed.

The Easiest Way to Handle It

Take your credits from a provider that sells them the way the rule is written.
